Hiekka is the Finnish word for “sand,” continuing the concept of the Language of Sand series, where each artwork is titled with the word “sand” in a different language.
The sand used in this painting was personally collected by me from my favourite beaches on the Baltic coast of Latvia.
Soft earthy tones, natural sand texture and simple geometric forms come together in a quiet, tactile composition. Shades of warm beige, muted pink and off-white reflect the subtle colours found along the coast, while the imperfections of the material are intentionally left visible.
Bringing natural materials into our living spaces has a grounding effect. Their texture, warmth and imperfection soften a space, making it feel more connected and alive
